The road through Back (Scottish Gaelic: Am Bac) commences at a road junction in Newmarket, north of Stornoway. It is a little touristed part of the Hebrides despite having some of the best beaches in Lewis. Traigh Mhor particularly is a hangout for surf dudes and dogwalkers on a Sunday when the weather is up to it. (Being east coast - not many beaches are in the Hebrides - the sands are less prone to the full force of the elements).
Also along the Back road, is the famed Coll Pottery (Fear an Eich) - open to the public and also the cairn at Gress.
Lord Leverhulme had great plans for the road and was in the process of building an extension to it so that it reached Ness - however just then, he left Lewis in a hurry. Hence at the end of the road is the "Bridge To Nowhere" - a fine 1920s construction which is an interesting anomaly. Nowadays this leads onto a footpath which indeed reaches Ness.
