Arrondissements of the Mayenne département

In France, the chief town of an arrondissement is known as the sous-préfecture. When an arrondissement contains the préfecture (capital) of the département, that préfecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a préfecture and as a sous-préfecture. The Mayenne département of France has 3 arrondissements. These are:

  2. Arrondissement of Laval, (préfecture of the Mayenne département: Laval) with 13 cantons and 88 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 134,173 in 1990, and was 140,207 in 1999, an increase of 4.5%.
  3. Arrondissement of Mayenne, (sous-préfecture: Mayenne) with 12 cantons and 102 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 87,058 in 1990, and was 86,979 in 1999, a decrease of 0.09%.
