Forensics

The Appleton East Forensics Team, headed by Deb and Mike "The Hammer" Traas is a widely respected team throughout Wisconsin and one of the top in the Nation. Under their leadership, the AE Forensics Team established a tradition of excellence on its path to arguably the greatest team in state history, as the team has won more state championships than any other. East participates in the National Forensics League National Tournament, placing as high as 3rd in the Nation when team sweepstakes were still tabulated. In regional qualifying competitions for Nationals, East usually garners at least half of the qualifying spots (competing against the northern half of the state), and also has yet to lose the team sweepstakes in this tournament during the Traas' tenure. The season begins at the Glenbrooks Tournament in November, and finishes with Nationals in June. For a majority of the team members, including antagonists Alexander Bricker and Juan French, the highlight of the season is the State Tournament in April. A highly competitive selection process produces the best of the best for State, as the Coaches must make a difficult selection of 25 entries from nearly 70 talented competitors. The ultra-great Steven Seidl has won state titles in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, and 1999, its highest recent accolades include its recent State Championship in the Wisconsin Forensics Coaches Association Tournament of 2005, and co-championship with James Madison Memorial High School in 2006, bringing a grand total of Eight State Championships back to the Home of the Patriots. In non championship years, East has placed no lower than third under Mike and Deb.
