Angie's List is a service that allows homeowners to rate contractors and service providers for quality, price, timeliness, responsiveness, and professionalism and provide comments. As of 2006 it has over 250,000 members in 32 cities. Angie's List, which is privately-held and for-profit, makes money by charging individuals $5.95 per month plus a 10 dollar initial fee, who post the information about contractors. Contractors are not allowed to post information about themselves. Contractors who provide poor service are given low ratings, which may hurt future business. Angie's List, through Neighbors in Action a third-party complaint-resolution service, will intervene on behalf of customers complaining about unresponsive contractors. The company provides a monthly magazine.
Based in Indianapolis, Indiana, the company was founded by Angie Hicks in 1995, who modeled the service on Indianapolis's Unified Neighbors, which had been founded in 1974. Initially off-line, Angie Hicks went door-to-door in Columbus, Ohio asking homeowners to rate contractors. In 1996, Angie's List purchased Unified Neighbors and relocated the company from Columbus to Indianapolis.
