An anaptyxis is a type of epenthesis, specifically a phonetic or phonological change involving insertion of a vowel to ease pronunciation. Examples:
- athlete -> ath-e-lete
- mischievous -> mischiev-i-ous
- wintry -> wint-er-y
- nuclear -> nucular
The Sanskrit-based term for the process is svarabhakti.
