Amisha Patel (born 9 June 1976) is an Indian actress who works in Bollywood movies. She was born in Mumbai. She is an alumna of the Cathedral and John Connon School where she was head girl for the academic year 1992-1993

Early life


Amisha Patel is the daughter of Amit Patel and Asha Patel, sister of Ashmit Patel and the granddaughter of the famous Indian lawyer Rajni Patel. Amisha's name is derived from her parents' names. (Amit+Asha=Ami-sha). She received a degree in Economics from Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts, US. She also studied classical Indian Bharatnatyam dance.

Her name Amisha was derived from the first three letters of her father's name Amit and the last three letters of her mother's name Asha. Her brother Ashmit's name was also derived similarly first three letters of his mother's name Asha and the last three letters of his father's name Amit.

She caught the eye of Bollywood director Rakesh Roshan at a Mumbai party. He signed her to appear with his son, Hrithik Roshan, in his next film project.

Film Career


She made her debut in the hit film Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000). The film made her a star overnight. She appeared next in the surprise success, Ek Prem Katha. These two successes were followed by a series of films that did badly at the box-office. Critics said that she was a mediocre actress. However, she received good reviews for her work in Aamir Khan's recent hit film, The Rising (2005).

Personal life


Her name is a blend of Amiand [Asha, the first names of her parents. She was raised by her grandmother Nani. She grew up speaking three Indian dialects, Hindi, Gujrati and Marathi -- sometimes in the same sentence.

She is said to have a strained relationship with her parents and brother, Ashmit Patel (his name is also a blend of Ashand [Amit). She is dating Bollywood director Vikram Bhatt.
