American Movie is a documentary about the making of an independent film. Milwaukee filmmaker Mark Borchardt feverishly works to finish his independent horror film Coven, only to slip into a downward spiral of poor financing and lack of interest by his friends. An amusing view into the lives of real Milwaukee residents. American Movie was directed by Chris Smith.

The film was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.
