Alter Bridge is a hard rock supergroup whose sound is an intermixing of 1970s classic rock and contemporary hard rock. It was formed by the likes of Mark Tremonti (former lead guitarist of Creed), and the band also consists of Brian Marshall (original bassist for Creed), Scott Phillips (former drummer of Creed), and Myles Kennedy (lead vocals, guitar, and formerly of The Mayfield Four).

Alter Bridge released their debut album One Day Remains in 2004, with the first single "Open Your Eyes," which was followed by "Find The Real," and "Broken Wings."

History

Alter Bridge does not prefer to think of themselves as Creed with a new singer, but as a new band entirely, following a completely different path. The name "Alter Bridge" comes from a bridge in Mark's childhood. That bridge is located on the controversial Alter Road, at the intersection of Korte, which forms the border between the city of Detroit, Michigan and the city of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan—a boundary which he, as a child, was strictly forbidden to cross. That line of abrupt demarcation also represents a sign of enigma.

There is more of a classic rock feel to the band when compared with Creed. Many of the tracks start off with a guitar introduction, leading in the rest of the band similarly to the previous Creed songs. The singer Myles Kennedy adds a definite change to the band, however. As opposed to the former baritone Scott Stapp, Kennedy is a tenor singer, giving more of a cutting edge type feel.

The guitar, especially the solos, uses a lot more wah than in Creed. The solos are almost entirely played on the treble pick-up as opposed to the bass pick-up in Creed. This seems to give the guitar much more presence in the music and provides better audibility of the picking style and tonal nuances of the high register notes. Lead guitarist Mark Tremonti said of the first record that he would finally get to show his talent, and many of the songs indeed have solos or complicated note-riddled sections.

In April 2006, Alter Bridge announced that they had terminated their contract with Wind-Up Records, securing the rights to much of their studio and live catalogue.

In June 2006, during a The Living Things concert in Zurich, it was alledged that members of Alter Bridge and their crew stormed on stage and physically attacked the band. Frontman of The Living Things Lillian Berlim said of the incident: "We were in the middle of our second song, and I had some stuff to say about the current US administration and the way they're handling the Iraq war. The Swiss were all behind us, and the crowd was cheering me on. As we went into our fourth song some goon from that Creed band came out swinging an American flag and then threw it at our drummer, Bosh." Another member of The Living Things was then trampled on by a member of Alter Bridge and one of their crew. *

In a statement released via their official website, Alter Bridge have contested that they were not involved themselves, but their stage crew instead. They claim they were in their dressing room when the fight occurred as both sides began to fight in front of the crowd. They countered the accusation by saying that a member of The Living Things had attacked one of Alter Bridge's stage crew for showing the American flag draped over a guitar and attempted to break it. The band maintain that they were only standing up for their beliefs, and have expressed regret about the incident. //www.marktremonti.net/articles/zurichstatement.htm

WWE Recognition

As of June 2005, their song "Metalingus" is used as WWE superstar Edge's entrance theme music. This has made them quite noticeable amongst WWE fans who may not be familiar with Alter Bridge. Alter Bridge was backstage at a live episode of WWE RAW, and Edge referred to Alter Bridge as the best rock group out there right now. In addition to providing Edge's entrance theme, Alter Bridge is also credited for the 2005 Royal Rumble theme song, "Find the Real". During the 2005 Home Run Derby in Detroit, Michigan, Alter Bridge, along with Center Fielder Johnny Damon and Catcher Mike Piazza, played "Open Your Eyes".

Individual Projects

After an invite by UK's Total Guitar magazine for Mark to provide a guest lesson, the song 'Ahavo Rabo Taco Salad' was born. Whilst initially supposed to solely involve Mark, the rest of the band also got involved. The result is one of Mark's finest solo performances and the band's first and finest instrumental track.
