Alegría (Spanish for "joy" or "jubilation") is a touring Cirque du Soleil production, created by Gilles Ste-Croix and originally directed by Franco Dragone.
Alegría is one of Cirque du Soleil's most popular touring troupes. It is about hope and perseverance. The main theme behind Alegría is the misuse of power, be it from kings, tyrants or dictators. The show is meant to inspire us to be better individuals and to work together with our fellow man. It is a glimpse of the horrors of our past and the great possibilities of our future.
Alegría is currently touring Europe and will visit Amsterdam and Brussels before returning to London in January 2007 for the final time. There the troupe will perform in the Royal Albert Hall. Following this engagement, the tour schedule will likely include Barcelona, Paris, Marseilles and Zurich before the troupe embarks on a tour of America
The highly-acclaimed music of Alegría was composed by René Dupéré.
The CD soundtrack was originally released on 1994-09-27 by RCA Victor Records and distributed by BMG (UPC 090266270125). In 2002, the soundtrack was re-released by Cirque du Soleil Musique Inc., with two additional tracks recorded from live shows during Alegría's 2001 season in Sydney. Cerceaux accompanies the Manipulation performance, such as Elena Lev's hoops act featured during that season. Malioumba accompanies the Flying Man act, which was performed by Aleksandr Dobrynin. However, both additional tracks are approximately 2:30 shorter than the corresponding musical tracks on the Alegría DVD.
The CD soundtrack (and DVD) feature the voice of opera-trained Canadian Francesca Gagnon.
The music also features in the Cirque Du Soleil celebration 'Midnight Sun' and the touring arena show, 'Delirium'.
In 1998, Alegría was adapted into a film of the same name, written by Rudy Barichello and directed by Franco Dragone. The cast included actors such as Frank Langella, Mako and Whoopi Goldberg, as well as several performers and musicians from the touring production (many appeared in both this film and the Alegría DVD recorded during the show's 2001 season in Sydney). The film employs a conventional structured narrative as opposed to the abstract allegory of the live show.
