Alaska Territory was an organized territory of the United States from August 24, 1912 to January 3, 1959, when Alaska became the 49th state. After it was purchased in 1867 from Russia as "Seward's Folly", but before it was a designated territory, the region was known as the Department of Alaska and then District of Alaska.
