Against the Grain is the seventh release (fifth full length album) by punk rock band Bad Religion released on November 23, 1990. This is the last album recorded with drummer Pete Finestone who left in 1991 to concentrate with The Fishermen and was replaced by the next drummer Bobby Schayer shortly before their 8th release, Generator. Against the Grain is considered by many to be the band's greatest album, and it contains many songs that are constantly cited as the band's best, including "Anesthesia," "Walk Away," and "Modern Man." One of the album's most popular songs, "21st Century (Digital Boy)" would later be re-recorded for the band's 1994 release Stranger Than Fiction. More than just a good album, Against The Grain gave many punks and many punk bands hope for the survival of punk in the 90s.

  • All songs are written by Greg Graffin and Mr. Brett except "The Positive Aspect Of Negative Thinking" by Jay Bentley and "Unacceptable" by Greg Hetson and Jay Bentley.
  • Although the album was released in November 1990, the re-released version in 2004 listed 1991 as the original release date, causing some confusion. Some sources also list 1991 as the release date (including some fan sites, lyrics sites, Tower.com, etc).
  • Track 11, "Operation Rescue" features former Black Flag/Circle Jerks singer Keith Morris singing backing vocals on this song.
  • Track 13, "21st Century (Digital Boy)" was re-recorded in 1994 and appeared on their tenth album Stranger Than Fiction. It also became a single.
