Afridi (Urdu: آفریدی ) is a Pashtun tribe. Their original limits probably included the Safed Koh range, north of the Kabal River, and south of the Kurram River. Now, they occupy the eastern Safed Koh region and northern Pakistan.

The term Afridi is possibly derived from the Aparyatea or Aparutia, which is pronounced today in the local community as Aparidai.

Most Afridis follow the religion of Islam and are very pious.

Afridis are known to be tough and very knowledgeable.

Famous Afridis

  • Khatir Afridi , a prominent poet who wrote over 40,000 poems in his only four years of writing poetry. He died very young at the age of 32. He has only one son left who has collected all his poems and made a book out of them , a book which has achieved a good market value among the speakers of Pushto.

  • Shahid Afridi, famous in the world of cricket for his destructive batsmanship, once a pinch-hitter but now an established all-rounder of the Pakistan cricket team. Holds world record for fastest 100 (off only 37 balls).
