Adelphi University is a private college located in Garden City, in Nassau County, New York. A nationally accredited coeducational university, it is the oldest institution of higher learning on Long Island. It was founded in 1896 in Brooklyn, New York, and takes its name from its location on Adelphi Street in Brooklyn, where it was related to the Adelphi Academy, a private secondary school. The Garden City campus, established in 1929 has five buildings that were designed by the noted architectural firm McKim, Mead, and White.

Adelphi is noteworthy for having the first dance program offered by a college. Founded in 1938 by the legendary modern dancer, Ruth St. Denis, Adelphi’s Dance Department has attracted some of the world’s most accomplished dancers, including Gelsey Kirkland, Norman Walker, Carmen DeLavelade, and Rebecca Wright.

Adelphi is one of the first schools in the nation to develop an Honors College, as opposed to simply an Honors Program, which is offered by most other universities. In 2002, the university also became a nationally registered arboretum. Today the university also has campuses in New York City, Poughkeepsie, and Hauppauge.

According to New York Magazine in 2004 Adelphi surpassed Hofstra University, Long Island University C.W. Post Campus and State University of New York at Stony Brook as the #1 college in Long Island, and continues to expand every year. In 2005, the Princeton Review listed Adelphi as one of the nation's best universities in the Northeast. In March 2006, the university began construction of new academic facilities and expansion of existing structures which will increase art studio space, increase the theater department, and enhance the sports and recreation building.
