Addison is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 35,914 at the 2000 census. A 2003 recount gave the community a population of 36,378.
The Village of Addison lies on Salt Creek. The community itself was named after 18th century writer Joseph Addison.
Addison is home to two large High Schools, both of which converge students from various neighboring villages: Addison Trail High School and Driscoll Catholic High School, which has won five consecutive state football championships from 2000 to 2005.
The Addison Industrial District was the proposed location for the reconstruction of Comiskey Park before it was voted down.
Larry Hartwig has been mayor of the village of Addison since 1995. Other elected officials include Village Trustee and Deputy Mayor Rich Veenstra, Village Trustees Sylvia Layne, Harry Theodore, Tom Hundley, Bill Lynch, and Joe McDermott, and Village Clerk Lucille Zucchero.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 24.6 km² (9.5 mi²). 24.4 km² (9.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.53%) is water.
There were 11,649 households out of which 38.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.7% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.9% were non-families. 16.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.07 and the average family size was 3.46.
In the village the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 32.0% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.8 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $54,090, and the median income for a family was $59,007. Males had a median income of $39,718 versus $27,815 for females. The per capita income for the village was $21,201. 9.6% of the population and 7.2% of families were below the poverty line, the highest figures of any municipality in DuPage County. Out of the total population, 13.2% of those under the age of 18 and 7.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
