The Achterhoek is a region in the eastern part of the Netherlands. It is the east part of Gelderland. The region lies between the IJssel, Oude IJssel, German border and the province Overijssel. It is a very rural area, with lots of free space, forests and farms. Specially the area around the town of Winterswijk is regarded as very beautiful. A famous beer was originated in this region: Grolsch beer was first brewed in Groenlo in 1615.

The most important towns in the Achterhoek are: Doetinchem, Winterswijk, Doesburg, Zutphen and Borculo. Doesburg and Zutphen are old hanseatic cities. Both have very well preserved centres with historical buildings. The local language is not Dutch, but Low Saxon.
