The Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay is one of the Academy Awards, the most prominent film awards in the United States. It is awarded each year to the writer of a screenplay adapted from another source (usually a novel, play, or short story).

In the 2nd and 3rd years there was only a single writing award for Writing Achievement with no distinction between original works and adaptations.

1930s


For the 1930/31 production year the award was again subdivided, and this one was once again Best Writing, Adaptation.

For 1935 the award became Best Writing, Screenplay

For 1956 the Category was renamed Screenplay--Adapted: For 1957 the category was renamed Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium:
