AT&T Laboratories, Inc. is the research & development arm of American telecommunications giant, AT&T.

History


AT&T Laboratories

AT&T Labs, the name, originated in 1996, when AT&T spun-off most of AT&T Bell Laboratories, Inc. into Lucent Technologies, whom then used the Bell Labs name for its R&D functions. Areas focusing on computer and communications science were retained by AT&T as the retitled 'AT&T Laboratories'. In 1999 AT&T Labs acquired the Olivetti Research Laboratory in Cambridge, England.

SBC Laboratories

SBC Laboratories, Inc. was founded in 1988 as the research and development division of SBC Communications, Inc.

The New AT&T Labs


In 2005, SBC Communications and AT&T Corp. merged to form AT&T Inc., "The New AT&T". AT&T Laboratories, Inc. became the new name of the combination of the original AT&T Laboratories and SBC Laboratories.
