AMPA (alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid) is a specific agonist for AMPA receptor. AMPA mimics the effect of glutamate. It is used in experiments to distinguish a receptor from the other ionotropic receptors for glutamate that are activated by different agonists: NMDA and kainate.
