Protoplasma (gr. proton: Erstes, plasma: das Geformte) ist die innere mehr oder weniger dünnflüssige Masse (sol- oder gelartig) aller lebenden Zellen inklusive Zellkern, ein komplexes kolloidales Stoffsystem.

Das Protoplasma besteht aus Wasser (60-80%), Eiweiß, Fetten, Kohlenhydraten, Vitaminen und Mineralsalzen.

Es gibt zwei Formen des Protoplasmas, Zellplasma (Cytoplasma) außerhalb des Zellkerns und Kernplasma (Karyoplasma, Nukleoplasma) innerhalb des Zellkerns.

Vom Protoplasma zu unterscheiden ist der Zellsaft in den Vakuolen von Pflanzenzellen.
