Headbanger.jpg Metal ist eine variantenreiche Musikrichtung und Subkultur. Ihre Ursprünge liegen im Hard Rock Anfang der 1970er, mit vielen Elementen des Blues, des Jazz und der Klassik. Eine gitarren- und schlagzeugzentrierte Klangfarbe, wie auch virtuose Spielweise sind häufige Merkmale.

Die zahlreichen Substile – beispielsweise Death Metal, Power Metal, Progressive Metal – unterscheiden sich zum Teil erheblich. Die Bandbreite reicht von extrem einfach gehaltenen, meist rhythmisch sehr treibenden Songstrukturen bis zu filigran ausgefeilten, multiinstrumentalen Kompositionen, die sich ansonsten nur in der klassischen Musik wiederfinden, von krächzendem Gebrüll und tiefem Grunzen bis zu opernartigen Gesangskünsten, von extrem langsamen bis rasant schnellen Rhythmen. Ähnlich vielfältig geht es bei den Texten zu, die von reiner Fantasy über Hassorgien, Religion, sexuell anzüglichen Partytexten, Melancholie bis zur politischen Gesellschaftskritik reichen ...
