Patrouillenboote sind leicht bewaffnete Streifenboote.

Sie werden gegen Schmuggler, Terroristen, illegale Einwanderer u.s.w. eingesetzt. Hochseepatrouillenboote (sog, off shore patrol vessels) sind für längere Fahrten ausgelegt und verfügen zum Teil sogar über Hubschrauberlandeplätze. Solche Boote werden auch zur Aufklärung im Krieg benutzt, da sie kleiner und flexibler als große Militärschiffe sind.
