Das National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) ist eine Behörde in den Vereinigten Staaten. Der frühere Namen der Behörde war The National Bureau of Standards.

Das NIST gehört zur technologischen Administration des Handelsministeriums und ist für Standardisierungsprozesse zuständig. Aus diesen ist der Verschlüsselungsalgorithmus DES wie auch AES hervor gegangen. Weiterhin werden die Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) veröffentlicht, die für US-Behörden gelten.

Das NIST hat ein jährliches Budget von 771 Millionen Dollar und sitzt in Gaithersburg und in Boulder.
