Das Musikfestival Monterey Pop Festival wurde von John Phillips (von den The Mamas and the Papas) und dem Producer Lou Adler vom 16. Juni bis zum 18. Juni 1967 auf dem Monterey County Fairground in Kalifornien veranstaltet. Es gilt als musikalischer Auftakt zur sogenannten "Hippie-Kultur" ("Flower Power", "Love and Peace-Generation").

Es trat das "Who is Who" der Rockmusik auf:

Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, The Who, Janis Joplin, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Electric Flag, The Butterfield Blues Band, Canned Heat, Eric Burdon and the New Animals, Jefferson Airplane und The Byrds, um nur einige zu nennen. Ravi Shankar spielte klassische indische Raga-Musik auf der Sitar.

Die Konzerte wurden später teilweise als Live-Mitschnitte auf Langspielplatten veröffentlicht (z.B. Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding und Ravi Shankar).
