Marshall Ambrose Neilan (Kosename Mickey; * 11. April 1891 in San Bernardino, Kalifornien; † 27. Oktober 1958 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien) war ein früher US-amerikanischer Filmproduzent, Drehbuchautor, Filmregisseur und Schauspieler.

Leben und Filme

Bereits im Alter von 11 Jahren brach Marshall Neilan die Schule ab, weil sein Vater starb und er jeden sich bietenden Job annehmen musste, um sich und seine Mutter ernähren zu können. Als Teenager begann er, kleine Rollen im Theater zu spielen. 1910, als die Filmproduktionsgesellschaft Biograph ihren Umzug aus dem Osten der USA nach Kalifornien vorbereitete, erhielt er einen Job als Fahrer und fuhr Manager, die auf der Suche nach einem geeigneten Standort für das Unternehmen waren, durch die Region Los Angeles. Seine Filmlaufbahn begann er jedoch erst 1912 als Darsteller in Kurzfilmen, meist Western, der Firma Kalem, wo er sich einen Namen als Chinesendarsteller machte und seit 1913 in zunehmendem Umfang auch Regie führte. 1915 engagierten ihn die die Firmen Selig Polyscope und die Famous Players-Lasky Corporation und seit 1917 arbeitete er für die Firma von Mary Pickford, mit der er bedeutende Filme wie „Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm“, „The Little Princess“ (beide 1917), „Stella Maris“ (1918) und „Daddy-Long-Legs“ (1919) inszenierte.

Von 1920 und 1926 betrieb Marshall Neilan ein eigenes Produktionsunternehmen, die „Marshall Neilan Productions“, das unter anderem den Film „Bits of Life“ (1921) hervorbrachte. Die weibliche Hauptrolle in diesem Filmdrama spielte die chinesisch-amerikanische Schauspielerin Anna May Wong, die Neilan als 15jährige entdeckt und in seinem Film „Dinty“ (1920) erstmals eingesetzt hatte. Ein anderer erfolgreicher Film der Marshall Neilan Productions war der Liebesfilm „The Lotus Eater“ (1921, mit John Barrymore).

1929 ging Neilan zur RKO Radio Pictures, für die er die Filme „Tanned Legs“ und „The Vagabond Lover“ (beide 1929) inszenierte, jedoch mit Mühe, da ihm die Umstellung auf den Tonfilm schwer fiel. 1930 schrieb er das Drehbuch für Howard Hughes’ bedeutenden Kriegsfilm „Hell’s Angels“.

Bedingt durch den Alkoholismus, an dem er bereits seit dem frühen Erwachsenenalter erkrankt war, gab Neilan seine Filmkarriere 1937 auf. Erst 1957 erschien er in Elia Kazans „A Face in the Crowd“ noch einmal in einer Nebenrolle.

Marshall Neilan war von 1913 bis 1921 mit der Schauspielerin Gertrude Bambrick und von 1922 bis 1929 mit der Schauspielerin Blanche Sweet verheiratet, die er in mehreren Filmen einsetzte. Beide Ehen wurden geschieden. Aus der Ehe mit Bambrick stammt ein Sohn, Marshall Ambrose (Marshall Neilan Jr., 1915-1988), der Drehbuchautor wurde. In den frühen 1920er Jahren hatte Neilan eine Liebesbeziehung mit Anna May Wong. Neilan starb im Alter von 67 Jahren an Krebs. Sein Grab befindet sich auf dem Angelus Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles.

Marshall Neilan erhielt 1940 den DGA Honorary Life Member Award der Directors Guild of America. Auf dem Hollywood Walk of Fame erinnert ein Stern an ihn (bei 6233 Hollywood Blvd).
