John Galt (* 2. Mai 1779 in Irvine, Schottland, † 11. April 1839 in Greenock) war ein schottischer Schriftsteller.

Sein Vater war ein Kapitän eines Schiffes. Die Familie zog 1789 nach Greenock, wo Galt die ersten Essays für die lokalen Zeitschriften schrieb. Im Jahr 1804 zog er nach London, wo er ab 1809 Jura studierte.

Galt reiste viel und freundete sich mit George Gordon Byron an. In den Jahren 1824-1829 lebte er in Kanada, wo er die Canada Company gründete. Nach einem Streit mit Gouverneur Peregrine Maitland wurde er inhaftiert.

1833 zog Galt wieder nach Greenock, wo er 1839 verstarb.
