Emily Watson war 1997 für ihr Debüt in Breaking the Waves und 1999 für Hilary & Jackie (in dem sie die Cellistin Jacqueline du Pré darstellte) für einen Oscar als beste Schauspielerin nominiert. Für Breaking the Waves wurde ihr auch der Europäische Filmpreis als beste Schauspielerin verliehen.

Obwohl sie fast nur im Independent- Bereich tätig ist, übernahm sie die Rolle von Joan Allen in Roter Drache. In der englischen Synchronisation des deutschen Animationsfilms Back to Gaya sprach sie eine der Figuren, ebenso wie in Corpse Bride – Hochzeit mit einer Leiche.

Sie ist seit 1995 mit Jack Waters verheiratet und lebt in London.
