Unter dem Dach der an der Londoner Börse gelisteten EMI Group plc befindet sich einerseits ein Plattenlabel mit mehreren Sub-Labels als auch der Musikverlag EMI Music Publishing. Die Firma wurde im März 1931 als Electric and Musical Industries Ltd als Zusammenschluss von UK Columbia Records und Gramophone Company/HMV gegründet. Fast 50 Jahre lang war EMI das größte Plattenlabel der Welt.

Im Februar 1979 kaufte EMI die United Artists-Tochterfirma United Artists Records.
