Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (16 de juliol de 1872--18 de juny de 1928) fou un explorador noruec de les regions polars. Liderà l'expedició antàrtica de 1911--1912 que fou la primera en atansar-se al Pol Sud.

Amudsen nasqué en una família de naviliers i capitans. Decidí dedicar la seua vida a l'exploració inspirat pel creuament de Groenlàndia que feu Fridtjof Nansen en 1888.
